Church Forests of Ethiopia

We recently assisted with the development of a website raising the profile of ongoing efforts to protect Church Forests in northern Ethiopia.

This conservation effort is the subject of the Hierotopia collection by award-winning photojournalist, Kieran Dodds.

Ethiopia has lost 95% of its native forests due to human activity in the last 100 years. In the north, the last remnants surround circular Tewahedo Orthodox church buildings protected as a tenet of faith. The project involves the building of walls around the remaining forests in a bid to protect them from further erosion.

Solutions

We worked in collaboration with Kieran and design agency, Cause & Effect, in developing a one-page solution that featured rich media in the form of images and video, and prominent links to an online donation page. We also developed an interactive map showing the locations of Church Forests and the status of their protective walls.

Website tracking using Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and Hotjar was implemented to show user activity and track goal completions – in this case clicks on the donate links. In addition, we developed an interactive analytics dashboard for the client using Google Data Studio.

The website and map were developed in a short time frame to coincide with Kieran’s work on the project.
