On Friday 6 September 2019 we had the privilege of photographing the annual Captain David Seath Memorial Fund Golf Day. This year the event was held at the beautiful Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
The charity
The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund was set up by the family of David following his tragic death at the London Marathon in 2016. Since its inception, it has raised over £298,000 for Help for Heroes, the charity that David was running for that day.
The Golf Day is part of a series of fundraising events run by the charity, which also include an annual 5K Memorial Run / Walk and Pub Quiz.
Organised by David’s brother, Gary Seath (a former colleague of Awdesign Digital’s owner, James Anderson), this year’s Golf Day raised £2,500.
Shooting the event
Equipment
Given the nature of the event, we recognised the need to use equipment that would allow flexibility in shooting styles. We needed a lens that would allow both relatively wide angle group shots and close up action shots. It was important that golfers should not be distracted by our close proximity or noises from camera operation.
We decided to rent a Canon 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM lens from Wex Rental. This professional level lens features built in image stabilisation, vital when shooting from distance. The quality of image that this produced was incredible.
Editing
We shot the golfers for over a period of three hours then moved to editing early afternoon. Shooting in RAW format to preserve as much detail as possible, we used Adobe Lightroom CC to select, edit and render final images for the client.
The images from the event were delivered to the client before the end of the event. These have since been used widely on their social media channels and on their website post about the event.
